Optimize pH and EC

pH Balance

pH controls how well plants can absorb nutrients. The ideal value is between 5.5-6.5 for most plants.

How to adjust pH:

  • Too high pH: Add pH-down (acid) drop by drop. Test and wait 15 minutes between adjustments.

  • Too low pH: Add pH-up (base) carefully. Less is more – never overcorrect.

  • Tip: In Sweden, we often have hard tap water (high pH). Let the water stand for a day before measuring pH.

EC Values (Electrical Conductivity)

EC shows the concentration of nutrients in the water. Too high = nutrient burn. Too low = nutrient deficiency.

Recommended EC values:

Leafy greens & herbs

1.2 - 2.0 mS/cm

Tomatoes & peppers

2.0 - 3.5 mS/cm

💡 Pro tip: Monitor EC daily. If the value drops quickly, plants are eating a lot and growing well. If it rises, they consume more water than nutrients – dilute the solution.

Advanced Optimization Tips

Water Temperature

Keep water between 18-22°C. Warmer water contains less oxygen and increases the risk of root rot.

💡 Use an aquarium fan or cool the nutrient solution on hot days

Oxygenation

Healthy roots need oxygen! Use air pumps with air stones to keep the water well oxygenated.

💡 Larger bubbles = more noise. Smaller bubbles = better oxygenation

Light Optimization

LED lights provide the most light per watt. Leafy greens need 12-16 hours of light/day, fruiting plants 14-18 hours.

💡 Use a timer for consistent light cycles

Circulation

Good water circulation distributes nutrients evenly and prevents "dead zones" where nutrients stand still.

💡 Check that all roots get access to the water
